Description
German Black Spotted Head Shrimp
German Black Spotted Head shrimp are a striking premium variety of Caridina cantonensis, typically growing to 2-3 cm in length. Their most distinctive feature is their unique color pattern combining solid white body coloration with a characteristic black spot or patch on the head region. This variety belongs to the prestigious Pinto family of shrimp, known for their distinctive two-tone coloration patterns.
The body displays a porcelain-white base color that can range from pure snow-white to a slightly creamy white. The defining characteristic is the black spot on the head region, which typically appears as a well-defined patch extending from just behind the eyes toward the rostrum. The size and exact shape of this black marking can vary among individuals, with some specimens showing larger, more pronounced spots while others display smaller, more concentrated markings.
Like other Caridina species, they possess a slightly curved rostrum, well-developed eyes on short stalks, and long, sensitive antennae. Their walking legs (pereopods) and swimming legs (pleopods) typically maintain the white base coloration, though some specimens may show subtle black speckling. The eyes stand out prominently against the white body and black head marking.
Sexual dimorphism is present, with males typically being smaller and sometimes showing less intense coloration patterns compared to females. Mature females develop a more rounded abdomen for carrying eggs, which are usually visible through their white exoskeleton. The contrast between the white body and black head marking is often more pronounced in females.
As a premium variety, Black Spot Head Pintos require precise water parameters. They thrive in very soft, acidic water (pH 5.8-6.4, GH 4-5, KH 0-1), temperatures between 20-24°C (68-75°F), and TDS between 80-120ppm. They need a specialized diet including high-quality shrimp foods, blanched vegetables, and biofilm, with particular attention paid to foods that help maintain their distinct coloration pattern.
