Blue Dream Shrimp
Blue Dream shrimp are a captivating variety of Neocaridina davidi, typically growing to 2-4 cm in length. Their most striking feature is their uniform, solid blue coloration that can range from a deep, intense sky blue to a lighter, more subtle powder blue. Unlike their Caridina cousins, Blue Dreams are known for their hardiness and adaptability, making them one of the most popular blue varieties in the hobby.
The blue coloration extends throughout their entire body, creating a solid, uniform appearance. High-grade specimens display an intense, consistent blue without any transparent areas or color variations. The intensity of the blue can vary based on genetics, diet, and environmental conditions, with the most prized specimens showing a deep, vibrant blue that appears to glow under aquarium lighting.
Like other Neocaridina species, Blue Dream shrimp possess a straight or slightly curved rostrum, well-developed eyes on short stalks, and long, sensitive antennae. Their walking legs (pereopods) and swimming legs (pleopods) maintain the same blue coloration as their body, though they may appear slightly more transparent. Even their internal organs can sometimes be visible through their semi-transparent exoskeleton, adding depth to their coloration.
Sexual dimorphism is present, with males typically being smaller and slightly less intensely colored than females. Mature females are notably larger and develop a more rounded abdomen for carrying eggs. When berried, females carry eggs that appear as small blue or greenish spheres visible through their exoskeleton. Female Blue Dreams tend to show more intense coloration, particularly during breeding periods.
Unlike more demanding shrimp species, Blue Dreams are relatively hardy and can thrive in a wider range of water parameters. They prefer parameters of pH 6.5-7.8, GH 6-8, KH 2-5, temperature 20-28°C (68-82°F), making them ideal for beginners and community tanks. They readily accept a variety of foods including standard fish flakes, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and naturally occurring biofilm.
