Description
Blue Steel Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis var. “Blue Steel”)
Blue Steel shrimp are a striking variety of Caridina cantonensis, typically growing to 2-3 cm in length. Their most distinctive feature is a metallic blue-gray coloration that resembles polished steel, giving them their namesake appearance. The coloration can shift between different shades depending on lighting conditions, ranging from a deep gunmetal blue to a lighter, silvery steel-blue.
What makes these shrimp particularly remarkable is their unique metallic sheen, which creates an almost mirror-like effect on their carapace. Under aquarium lighting, their bodies appear to have a metallic luster that can shift and change as the shrimp moves, creating an almost iridescent effect. This metallic quality is most pronounced on the carapace and larger segments of their body.
Like other Caridina species, Blue Steel shrimp possess a slightly curved rostrum, well-developed eyes on short stalks, and long, sensitive antennae. Their walking legs (pereopods) often display a lighter version of the metallic coloring, while the swimming legs (pleopods) are more transparent with a slight bluish tint. The overall effect is reminiscent of brushed stainless steel with blue undertones.
Sexual dimorphism is present, with males typically being smaller and often displaying a less intense metallic sheen compared to females. Mature females develop a more rounded abdomen for carrying eggs, which may be visible through their semi-transparent shells. The metallic coloration often appears more pronounced in females, particularly during breeding periods.
These shrimp thrive in conditions typical for Caridina species, preferring soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-7.0, GH 4-6, KH 0-2), temperatures between 22-26°C (72-79°F), and a varied diet including specialized shrimp foods, blanched vegetables, and natural biofilm. They particularly benefit from well-maintained water conditions to preserve their metallic luster and overall health.
