Description
Purple Metallic Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis var. “Purple Metallic”)
Purple Metallic shrimp are a premium variety of Caridina cantonensis, typically growing to 2-3 cm in length. Their most distinctive feature is their unique purple coloration combined with a striking metallic sheen that creates an almost iridescent effect. The color can range from a deep royal purple to a lighter lavender, always accompanied by the characteristic metallic luster that gives them their name.
The metallic quality of their coloration is what sets them apart from other purple varieties. Under aquarium lighting, their exoskeleton displays an almost chrome-like sheen that shifts and changes as the shrimp moves, creating a mesmerizing display. High-grade specimens show consistent purple metallic coloration throughout their body, with the metallic effect being particularly pronounced on the carapace and larger body segments.
Like other Caridina species, Purple Metallic shrimp possess a slightly curved rostrum, well-developed eyes on short stalks, and long, sensitive antennae. Their walking legs (pereopods) and swimming legs (pleopods) often display a lighter version of the metallic purple coloration, adding to their ethereal appearance. The interplay of light on their metallic surface can create stunning visual effects, especially when they move around the aquarium.
Sexual dimorphism is present, with males typically being smaller and sometimes showing less intense coloration compared to females. Mature females develop a more rounded abdomen for carrying eggs, which are visible through their metallic-tinted exoskeleton. Females often display more intense coloration and metallic sheen, particularly during breeding periods.
As a premium Caridina variety, Purple Metallic shrimp require precise water parameters. They thrive in very soft, acidic water (pH 5.8-6.4, GH 4-5, KH 0-1), temperatures between 20-24°C (68-75°F), and TDS between 80-150ppm. They need a specialized diet including high-quality shrimp foods, blanched vegetables, and biofilm, with particular attention paid to foods that help maintain their distinctive coloration and metallic sheen.
