Description
Red Steel aka Pink Bolt Shrimp
The Red Steel Shrimp, also known as the Pink Bolt Shrimp, is a rare and highly sought-after Caridina variety prized for its soft pink to deep red coloration, often with a pearlescent or metallic sheen. This shrimp is a selectively bred hybrid, combining features of Steel and Bolt lineage shrimp, resulting in its delicate, pastel-like hue that can range from light pink to deep red, often with a translucent or milky white carapace.
Like other high-end Caridina shrimp, Red Steel Shrimp require pristine water conditions to thrive. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water, with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.2, GH of 4-6, and KH close to 0. The temperature should be maintained between 68°F and 72°F (20°C to 22°C) to prevent stress and maintain longevity. A well-established, heavily planted tank with moss, leaf litter, and driftwood provides the ideal environment, encouraging biofilm growth for grazing and offering natural hiding spots.
Diet is crucial for maintaining their coloration and health. They require a high-quality shrimp-specific diet, enriched with minerals and protein-based supplements, along with occasional blanched vegetables. Maintaining low nitrate levels (below 5 ppm) is essential, as Red Steel Shrimp are highly sensitive to fluctuations in water quality. They are best housed in species-specific tanks or with other peaceful Caridina shrimp to reduce stress and competition. Given their delicate nature and strict care requirements, Red Steel Shrimp are recommended for advanced shrimp keepers.
