Description
Yellow Galaxy Fishbone Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis var. “Yellow Galaxy Fishbone/Tiger”)
Yellow Galaxy Fishbone shrimp are a striking variety of Caridina cantonensis, typically growing to 2-3 cm in length. Their most distinctive feature is a vibrant yellow base color adorned with a complex pattern that combines elements of both galaxy (spotted) and fishbone or tiger (striped) markings. The yellow coloration can range from a bright, sunny yellow to a softer, pastel shade.
The galaxy pattern consists of numerous small, dark spots scattered across the shrimp’s body, creating a starry night sky effect. Overlaying or intermingling with this pattern are darker stripes or lines reminiscent of either fishbones or tiger stripes, depending on the individual. These markings can vary in intensity and distribution, with some specimens showing more prominent galaxy spots and others displaying more defined stripes.
Like other Caridina species, Yellow Galaxy Fishbone/Tiger shrimp possess a slightly curved rostrum, well-developed eyes on short stalks, and long, sensitive antennae. Their walking legs (pereopods) often display a lighter yellow color with hints of the galaxy and stripe patterns, while the swimming legs (pleopods) are more transparent.
Males are typically smaller and may have less intense coloration and patterning compared to females. Mature females develop a more rounded abdomen to accommodate eggs, which may be visible through their semi-transparent shells.
These shrimp thrive in conditions similar to other Caridina species, preferring soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-7.0, GH 4-6, KH 0-2), temperatures between 22-26°C (72-79°F), and a varied diet including high-quality shrimp food, blanched vegetables, and biofilm.
