Description
Red Onyx Shrimp
Red Onyx shrimp are a premium variety of Caridina cantonensis, typically growing to 2-3 cm in length. Their most distinctive feature is their deep, rich red coloration with a unique glossy sheen that resembles polished onyx stone, hence their name. The coloration is notably different from other red varieties due to its depth and lustrous quality.
The red coloration in Red Onyx shrimp has a particular characteristic depth that creates an almost three-dimensional appearance. High-grade specimens display a deep, wine-red to burgundy color with an almost glass-like polish to their exoskeleton. This polished appearance creates a distinctive sheen that sets them apart from other red Caridina varieties. The intensity of their color can appear to change slightly under different lighting conditions, showing subtle variations in tone while maintaining its characteristic glossy appearance.
Like other Caridina species, Red Onyx shrimp possess a slightly curved rostrum, well-developed eyes on short stalks, and long, sensitive antennae. Their walking legs (pereopods) and swimming legs (pleopods) maintain the same deep red coloration as their body, though they may appear slightly more translucent. The overall effect is that of a finely polished gemstone, particularly when the shrimp is viewed under optimal lighting.
Sexual dimorphism is present, with males typically being smaller and sometimes showing less intense coloration compared to females. Mature females develop a more rounded abdomen for carrying eggs, which are visible as dark red clusters through their glossy exoskeleton. Females often display more intense coloration, particularly during breeding periods.
As a premium Caridina variety, Red Onyx shrimp require precise water parameters. They thrive in very soft, acidic water (pH 5.8-6.4, GH 4-5, KH 0-1), temperatures between 20-24°C (68-75°F), and TDS between 80-150ppm. They need a specialized diet including high-quality shrimp foods, blanched vegetables, and biofilm, with particular attention paid to foods that help maintain their distinctive coloration and glossy appearance.
