Description
Yellow Goldenback Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis var. “Yellow Goldenback”)
Yellow Goldenback shrimp are a distinctive variety of Caridina cantonensis, typically reaching 2-3 cm in length. Their most striking feature is a metallic golden-yellow stripe that runs along the dorsal surface (back) of the shrimp, contrasting beautifully with their more translucent body. This golden stripe typically extends from the rostrum to the tail, creating a distinct line of color that appears to shimmer under aquarium lighting.
The base body color is usually semi-transparent with a slight yellow tint, which makes the golden dorsal stripe stand out even more prominently. The intensity of the golden coloration can vary among individuals, with some specimens displaying a bright, metallic gold while others show a softer, more subtle golden hue. Under certain lighting conditions, the golden stripe may exhibit iridescent qualities, shifting between yellow and golden tones.
Like other Caridina species, Yellow Goldenback shrimp possess a slightly curved rostrum, well-developed eyes on short stalks, and long, sensitive antennae. Their walking legs (pereopods) are typically transparent with a slight yellow tinge, while the swimming legs (pleopods) are almost completely transparent.
Sexual dimorphism is evident, with males generally being smaller and displaying a less intense golden coloration compared to females. Mature females develop a more rounded abdomen for carrying eggs, and their golden stripe often appears wider and more pronounced. The eggs carried by females are usually visible through the transparent shell and typically appear as a cluster of tiny yellow or golden spheres.
Yellow Goldenback shrimp thrive in conditions typical for Caridina species, preferring soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-7.0, GH 4-6, KH 0-2), temperatures between 22-26°C (72-79°F), and a varied diet including specialized shrimp foods, vegetables, and natural biofilm. Dark substrates and backgrounds can help accentuate their golden coloration, making them particularly striking in well-planted aquascapes.
